Friday Photo: Swedish Birthday Cake

Some things are worth celebrating. Like birthdays. Which is why you bring back Swedish flags and make cakes covered in whipped cream. Recipe to come soon.
Thanks to all the friends for all the birthday love.
Brunch Recipe: Bacon Cups
I’m not a crazed bacon lover — I swear — but these are all sorts of amazing. Oh, and simple. Just make sure you’re using organic and local ingredients, because nobody wants a brunch from anything other than happy chickens and pigs.
Ingredients:
- 6 strips of local, organic bacon
- 6 organic eggs, preferably from chickens you know
- Some type of crumbly cheese: goat, blue cheese, parmesan, etc.
- Green onion, chopped
Directions:
- Line each tin hole of a muffin tin with bacon. If you like your bacon a little crispy, put tin in the oven at 350F for 10 or so.
- Crack one egg into each hole.
- Sprinkle with green onions and cheese.
- Bake for 20 minutes.
- Pop the bacon cups out of pan onto a plate and serve immediately.
Afternoon Procrastination: Tarte Au Citron
Those Meyer lemons were just sitting on the table staring at me. And I did have a dinner party to go to. So tarte au citron it had to be. Nothing like an apartment filled with citrus scent to re-motivate on the to do lists.
Glad Lucia!
One of my favorite days in December…
Went all out and made a saffran cake with almond paste. Recipe here.
Hembakat är Bäst: Minimal Cookbook from IKEA
The cookbook from the furniture giant is only available in Swedish, but the images say it all. Hembakat är Bäst — which translates to Homemade is Best — features traditional Swedish baked goods all presented in a minimal, simple, and beautiful way. Makes me want to go and make some kanelbullar… love.
New Summer Favorite: Watermelon Salad
I’d seen variations on watermelon salad making their way around the web, and I figured it was time to make my own. Much like most of my food endeavors, this recipe was dictated by what I had on hand, so although most watermelon salad calls for mint I went all out and threw in some basil. Partnered with the sweet taste of the watermelon and the salty feta, you’ve got a salad that’s both refreshing and interesting. The new summer must have.
