Friday Photo: Waiting

leave a comment »

It was a warm spring day, the kind when parents have a difficult time keeping their children close by and even well behaved dogs just want to sprint into oblivion. I on the other hand just wanted to take it all in, and sat at one of my favorite downtown cafes. Iced coffee in hand, it was the perfect people watching position, allowing me to observe all the ins and outs of one of the first true days of spring. The kind of day that reassures you that, no, winter isn’t going to last forever.

Benches lined the sidewalk in front of the cafe, and a fashionable and smartly dressed woman sat down to take a break, probably engaging in the same activity as I was.

Or sitting an waiting for her next afternoon engagement, committing time to simply enjoying the moment.

Friday Photo: Spring Cherry Blossom Series

with one comment

Winter barely started to creep away when spring sun graced the streets of Portland. Snow drifts elsewhere meant crocuses and cherry blossoms for us, and people filled outdoor tables at cafes, sporting heavy jackets of course, but ready to soak in the beginnings of the colorful season.

Cherry blossoms have lined the streets, the distinct spring aroma becoming a part of every afternoon bike ride. Rain squalls bring blossoms to the ground, dotting the asphalt with pink dots. A reminder that, yes, cold, gray winter days will once again be traded for sun and the ambiance of a city enjoying warmer days.

Friday Photo: Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?

leave a comment »

In Portland, urban farming is big (there’s even a store completely dedicated to it), so it’s no surprise to find a chicken or too trotting down the sidewalk on an early morning. I’m off to get my own…

Portland-based eco clothier Nau finally has their new Spring 2010 line out. As usual, the line incorporates sustainable materials like recycled polyester, merino wool and organic cotton.

And sticking with the Nau aesthetic, the Spring 2010 has the classic urban chic look to it; the pictures speak for themselves. Check out the full men’s and women’s lines here.

leave a comment »

Via Under Solen:

For our Portland friends, here’s an event you’ll definitely want to check out. We’ve mentioned Mountainfilm before, but what’s really cool about the film festival is that they take the whole thing on tour, giving people that can’t make it to Telluride to experience some of the amazing films and inspiring messages. Mountainfilm on Tour will be in Portland this Thursday, January 28, 2010, hosted at Portland State University. Check it out!

What: Portland State’s Outdoor Program and Portland Mountain Rescue are hosting the Mountainfilm on Tour festival on campus. It will include four hours of films that celebrate the great outdoors—especially mountains and mountaineering culture. In addition to the festival screenings, the Outdoor Program will hold a raffle and silent auction. Both Portland State students and the public are welcome to attend.

Where: Portland State University, Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom, SMSU 355

When: Thursday, January 28, 2010, 6-10pm.

Cost: Students $7 advance, $10 door
Faculty and public $10 advance, $12 door

More info here.

Friday Photo: Stop… And Take the Train

leave a comment »

My winter adventures kick off today with a train ride on the Amtrak. So I figured it was only fitting to make today’s Friday Photo train related. Taken at the Portland station, this small sign made me stop take a second look down the tracks. Hopefully it’s not the only thing helping to guide the trains as they make their way into the station…

Get to Know Portland, Oregon: 5 PDX Blogs

with 4 comments

Portland, OR is own for having a distinct flair, and there’s no better way to get a feel for the city than through some of it’s excellent style and design blogs. Ready to get to know why Portland is the up and coming hotspot? Here are my top 5 Portland blog picks.

  • Urban Weeds – Simple, sleek and yet with a little bit of funk, Urban Weeds is quintessential Portland style. Features on local designers and shop owners as well as classic pictures from the street.
  • Velocouture – Ok, so Velocouture isn’t exactly a Portland-centric blog, but it’s published locally and focuses on one of the city’s favorite pastimes: cycling. Plenty of proof that choosing two wheels over four doesn’t mean sacrificing style.
  • Portland Loves: Local – Portland is home to a plethora of creative and cutting edge designers, and Portland Loves: Local gives homage to them all. Beyond that, the blog is simply a collection of all the things that make Portland wonderful, and sure to inspire new visitors.
  • Portland Architecture – A visual exploration of the city’s buildings and designs, Portland Architecture should be the first stop for anyone with an interest in Portland’s urban feel. With all the architecture focused blogs out there, it’s nice to have one that’s committed to local coverage.
  • BikePortland – You can’t experience Portland without experiencing bikes, and BikePortland is the number one spot for cycling related news, style, and beyond.
