Departure Deck Art Installation for the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial

This site-specific, permanent art installation design for the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial was created to commemorate the forcible removal of the hundreds of Japanese Americans on Bainbridge Island during World War II. The installation includes a series of metal sculptures and cutouts, as well as design for a sound box at the entry to create both a visual and an audible experience for visitors.
All of the artwork began with papercut illustrations, silhouettes created from single pieces of paper. These grew to life in metal, thanks to the work of Turner Exhibits. In this video you can see some of the behind-the-scenes work of the fabrication process.
