Why We Have to Normalize Food Consciousness

I was pulling out ingredients for dinner from the refrigerator and my friend was visibly squirming looking at the quart glass bottle of green sludge that was on the first shelf.
“It’s just a kale smoothie.”
She looked at me and rolled her eyes.
“I know, I know… who has kale smoothies in their refrigerator?” I responded. I paused for dramatic effect in order to underline the absurdity of my next statement. “It has chia seeds in it too.”

The Secret Diary of a Foodie

Monday February 27, 2012, 8:55 p.m.
Dear Diary,
A serendipitous afternoon today. Having left my kale slaw with Meyer lemon vinaigrette at home, I was forced to buy lunch, so I went over to the food carts. Why the pickle cart is still in business is beyond me, but I went for three fish tacos next door. I started talking with the guy in front of me, who ordered the avocado and cactus burrito (his first point, given that the cactus burrito is my second go-to after the fish tacos). He told me he comes here a lot. He was cute, had a coffee thermos under his arm, looked like he had his life together. He told me the best taco he ever ate was in Austin. Second point for him – he loves the Austin food cart scene too! I think we had a good connection. We’ll see what happens.
Paris vs. New York: Coffee

I love the Paris vs. New York collection of prints (and it’s a book). This one sort of says it all though.
Ideas Come When…

My ideas usually come not at my desk writing but in the midst of living. -Anais Nin
Ideas come when you:
say yes more often.
get outside.
drink coffee.
are open to inspiration.
dream.
celebrate the ordinary.
love.
surround yourself with creatives.
are intentional.
live passionately.

Weekend Refresh: 23 Feet, Outdoor Slumber Parties and Home
Sometimes you need to hit the refresh button. And so you plan a city escape.
A personal screening of 23 Feet is certainly something to be thankful for, and somehow I conned the Red Reel ladies into bringing the Airstream out to my parents’s house out in the wild hinterlands of Western Washington. That’s what I call love.
Pop up a screen, turn on the Christmas lights and lay out some blankets on the hill and you’ve got yourself an outdoor theatre.
Love From Sweden: Lös Godis

Lös godis: very much my one true love. Imagine this: an entire wall covered in all kinds of candy, from salted licorice to chocolate covered rum balls, all to be carefully selected and placed in a colorful bag.
Weigh it at the checkout, raise your eyebrows when you realize how much was actually in that bag, and then smirk internally when you say to yourself, “who cares, it’s Saturday!” Then take it all home and pour the lös godis into a bowl where — for maybe for a few seconds — you enjoy the multicolored glory. But soon it’s all consumed, an empty, wrinkled bag with a fine layer of sugar your only remnants.

Glad Midsommar!

Pickled herring, potatoes with dill, chocolate cake with strawberries… I love Midsummer, even when I’m not in Sweden to celebrate. The official kickoff to summer.
Want to throw your own solstice celebration Swedish style? Here’s the ultimate guide to what food and drink you need to make it all come together. Hint: it includes good tips for locally distilled Aquavit, recipe for a delicious mustard dill sauce and a little background on just why you should celebrate.
Glad midsommar!
