Winter Sunset

with 3 comments

Frost covered the ground for the larger part of the day, a white dusting remaining in cold corners protected by the shade of trees. Typical Pacific Northwest gray rain clouds were traded for clear winter skies, a brisk nip in the air. On beautiful days like this, it’s clear that the evening landscape shouldn’t be missed, and we packed up a thermos of tea and headed for one of the many rocky beaches of the Puget Sound.

Quiet and clear, as afternoon turned into dusk, the seasonal sun set, with warm colors reflecting off of soft clouds, turning the sky into a winter painting. With the setting sun, the air turned colder, and steam rose from our tea cups as we looked out over the calm waters and breathed in the winds of the season.

That’s how you should spend Christmas Day…

Winter Palace

murman arkitekterAs we head towards colder months, here is some gorgeous winter inspiration. Restaurant Tusen is a creatively and naturally inspired building in Ramundberget, Sweden and was designed by Swedish firm Murman Arkitekter. They recently won first prize in the “holiday” category at the World Architecture Festival.

A Weekend of Iceshoeing… Oh Wait, Snowshoeing

Went snowshoeing a couple of weekends ago, and although it hadn’t snowed in ages and the physical activity probably should have been deemed “iceshoeing,” it was a great adventure all the same.

An excerpt from my trip dispatch over at Wend:

snowshoe21Packs filled with apples and granola bars (because we left in too much of a hurry to actually plan a real lunch), we set out on a section of the Pacific Crest Trail, headed for Trillium Lake. To say the snow was well packed would be an understatement. “Having fun on the ice today?” I remarked when we passed a group of cross country skiiers.

“Yeah, you’re probably having a much easier time,” replied one of them, pointing to my snowshoes.

“True, although I think it would be easier just to walk.”

But if you’ve come to snowshoe, you’re going to snowshoe dammit! No matter how much easier taking them off might be…

This was taken at my parents’ house over Thanksgiving. My mother had creatively placed these mason jars on a metal table on our patio, and the morning air had fogged them up which I thought was really beautiful.

Happy Friday!
