Portland Will be the Copenhagen of America

Caught this at Oregon Manifest two weekends ago; the uber hip and cool bike show that any two-wheel lover should make sure to attend is going on through the rest of the month. (Plus the exhibition on Danish cycling culture — which features this quote — is fantastic!)
Portland Loves to Recycle
At the Mississippi Avenue Street Fair this weekend, I was amazed at how clean the ground was — free of the usual chaotic debris that is a signature sign of most large events, which is pretty amazing at a street fair that was estimated to pull about 20,000 visitors this year. On the other hand, the recycling bins were well in use, proving once again the city’s commitment to sustainability.
This early evening shot captures it best.

Friday Photo: Le Cafe, C’est Ma Vie

“La vie est belle, et le cafe, c’est ma vie.”
This stamp from the Fresh Pot on the back of the bags of Stumptown Coffee that the coffee shop sells is so great: Life is beautiful, and coffee, it’s my life.
Design is Important

Seen in the window of Portland Design Within Reach. I would even go so far to add that “sustainable design is important because environmental chaos is hard.” Just take the recent ecotopia proposal in Gothenburg as an example.
Friday Photo: What’s Inside?

I spent Sunday afternoon last weekend walking in the late February sunshine, tracking down interesting objects to photograph. Hidden behind an overwhelming amount of overgrown bamboo stalks was a small shed, painted in a turquoise clearly faded by the Portland elements. I love finding little surprises like this right in the middle of the city, but the doors were locked, and so I can only speculate as to what was inside…
Happy Friday!
Friday Photo: Stop Driving

This is such a classic Portland photo, I just couldn’t help putting it up!
Friday Photo: Europe? No, it’s Portland…

I am finally the proud owner of a digital SLR (how did I make it so long with just a 35mm???) and although there hasn’t been loads of time to go out and play with it, I did manage to snap this last night while at First Thursday.
