How to Make Your Own Cold Brew Coffee

For coffee lovers, cold brew is summer’s nectar. You can of course buy cold brew systems, or end up with an expensive coffee shop addiction, but really all you need for delicious cold brew is a good coffee roast and a French press.

Oatmeal with fresh strawberries and Water Avenue coffee, freshly brewed in the travel French press. Eaten by the creek with sun streaming through the trees. More of this, please.
Are You Part of a Food Trend or Part of a Movement?

This is the latest installment of my Foodie Underground column.
“I just had a Portland moment and only you will appreciate,” my friend said, calling from Tuscon in the middle of a Sunday.
“Ok, what?”
“Well, so we walked into this cute coffee shop and the first thing I thought to myself ‘I wonder where they roast their beans?'” she paused. “Who am I?”
At first thought I saw nothing wrong with this situation. Good coffee shops tend to sell good coffee, and if they’re really good, they’re probably running a coffee roasting operation in the back. Nothing weird there.
But at second thought, I realized what she meant. Most people, even those in coffee-centric cities, are probably more concerned with what coffee drink they’re going to buy than where the beans were roasted. We’re in the minority.

Love From Sweden: Baked Deliciousness

Fika. The best Swedish word there is. A noun, a verb… it’s all encompassing. In it’s simplest form, it all comes down to this equation: Coffee + baked good = Swedish tradition.
Here we’ve got a little blackberry tart with heavy whipped cream, complete with a slice of chokladkaka in the background. Summer bliss.
Love From Sweden: an ongoing travel photo series to capture the essence of Sweden.
Sundays in December…
… are for Advent. Swedish style.
More over on Inspirational Mittemellan, including my favorite Christmas recipe.
Swedish Birthdays: Princesstårta

Somehow I lucked out and got to spend my birthday in Sweden… a classic Swedish birthday celebrated in style, with lots of coffee and a traditional princesstårta. Its bright green color may scare some, but it’s a delicious blend of whipped cream and raspberry jam covered in marzipan.
Friday Photo: Le Cafe, C’est Ma Vie

“La vie est belle, et le cafe, c’est ma vie.”
This stamp from the Fresh Pot on the back of the bags of Stumptown Coffee that the coffee shop sells is so great: Life is beautiful, and coffee, it’s my life.
