Fall issue of Wend is out!
After a summer of hard work, the fall issue of Wend is finally out! The funny thing about working on a magazine is that you spend so much time researching and writing articles, then editing them, then proofing the pages before they go to the printer, that by the time the issue arrives in the office, it feels like old news. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t love this issue!
There’s an amazing story by Gregg Treinish and Deia Schlosberg, the first two people to hike the entire length of the Andes, as well as plenty of other stuff to inspire you to get out and do something! You can preview some of the articles here.
DIY plastic bag
Finally a smart way to re-use plastic; make a new bag out of it! It entails taking a whole bunch of old plastic bags, ironing them into crazy forms, and sewing it all up into the above finished product. The instructions are all over at Plenty Magazine and I have to say I really feel like I need to make one… check back with me in a couple of weeks (I have to track down an iron first!). And for those in need of something more heavy duty, you can even go all out and make a messenger bag from recycled trash bags. You’ll immediately exude “green” and “resourceful” and be able to show-up all of your friends who are toting their old school purchased packs.
Current beats: Pacifika
Sweet Peruvian sounds and Latin beats inspired by a bit of flamenco mixed with electronica from Vancouver-based Pacifika. Love it!
Earth From Above
One of my favorite photographers, Yann Arthus Bertrand, is bringing his work to the US in 2009. Bertrand’s aim is to inspire people to think globally about sustainable living and he does so by taking his art to the sky. Shooting from airplanes, Bertrand manages to capture impressive shots that visually teach us about environments around the globe.
His new exhibit, Earth From Above, will feature 150 4-ft. by 6-ft. prints, on display in New York City from May 1 2009 to June 28, 2009. The exhibit will then take off for the other coast and be displayed in California. Another excellent example of artwork meant to change our perspectives on how we live and interact with the world around us.

1% For The Planet – choose the environment
Business can be a good thing. At least if those businesses are part of 1% For The Planet. The idea is simple: 1% of sales are donated to an extensive network of environmental organizations worldwide. If you believe in the environment, pass along or post this video to spread the word. Because even in a bad economy, we have to take care of the environment. Therefore, making educated consumer choices means supporting companies that believe in the world we live in and are devoted to protecting it. That’s a healthy choice.

The last weekend of September
The last weekend in September meant possibly my final trip to farmers market, a walk in unheard of autumn sunshine and a chance to remind myself that my French language skills have yet to disappear at the local creperie. And I even had time to put up a new recipe on the food blog! Go check it out.
