Friday Photo: A Taste of Summer Fruit

leave a comment »

With a mid-winter burst of warm weather and sunshine, I’ve gotten started thinking about spring and summer. Sure, it’s a little premature, but there’s nothing better than dreaming about walking barefoot and picking berries out in the country. So here’s a photo to celebrate all that I love about the warmer months… that will come eventually.

Friday Photo: Glittery Window

with one comment

A salt encrusted ferry window glittering in the sunlight. Outside a seagull struggles against the unrelenting wind. Inside passengers sip on double non-fat lattes and read the paper. Sometimes it’s the simplest photos that hold the most sensory images.

Friday Photo: On the Water

with 2 comments

West Coast, Gothenburg, Sweden. A salty breeze, a forgotten towel, waves lapping at the granite rocks, kayakers sliding by on the calm waters. Sensory memories for a winter afternoon.

Friday Photo: Pebbly Beach

It’s been quiet on the blog recently. That’s because there’s been a whole lot of stuff going on at Under Solen and I’ve been feeling a bit swamped… in a good way. But next week I’ll be back in action. Until then, enjoy this photo of my favorite place of solace on a winter afternoon.

Friday Photo: Utah Post-Ski

leave a comment »

An unplanned New Year’s resolution (unplanned because it happened organically in the last few weeks) has been to learn how to ski. And what better place for your first turns than Utah? A beautiful day at Snow Basin – after a couple hours of low visibility and icy snow straight in the face – with a gorgeous drive into Salt Lake was an excellent introduction to my first time skiing in Utah. And winter sunsets are always a wonderful thing.

Friday Photo: Water Droplets

leave a comment »

I have a thing for taken photos of water droplets on leaves. When I visit my parents’ house, I’m known to do a morning photo tour of the garden just so I can get the last of the dew, or if I’m lucky, the leftovers of overnight rain. It’s always so beautiful.

Friday Photo: Winter Tree

with 2 comments

While the rest of the world is experiencing extremely low temperatures and plenty of snow and wintry weather, I’m stuck in dreary drizzle. Which means I’m longing for genuine winter. I love the lines of this tree; the way the white snow lays on the dark green and creates an interesting perspective of shade. A simple photo that says a lot.

Here’s to some snow…

Friday Photo: Stop… And Take the Train

leave a comment »

My winter adventures kick off today with a train ride on the Amtrak. So I figured it was only fitting to make today’s Friday Photo train related. Taken at the Portland station, this small sign made me stop take a second look down the tracks. Hopefully it’s not the only thing helping to guide the trains as they make their way into the station…

Friday Photo: Abstract Afternoon

Standing in the Seattle ferry terminal a few weeks ago, I looked out through a crack in between two glass panels. The sky and water were various shades of gray, and the red blinking lights in various spots around the terminal stuck out against the wintry afternoon.

Friday Photo: Seattle Ferry

with one comment

Exploring Western Washington and Puget Sound by hopping on one of the many ferries is an excellent way to get to know this beautiful area of the state. Taking the ferry to Seattle, walking up to Pike Place Market and spending the day with beautiful views over the water happens to be one of my favorite weekend activities when in Washington.

I captured this shot on the way back from a day in Seattle, filled with coffee and pain au raisin at the excellent French bakery Le Panier, fish and chips at the market, plenty of window shopping, and an expertly wrapped piece of chevre flavored with ash from Beecher’s. An amazing display of clouds and sun rays played out during the whole ferry ride home, topping an urban day off with an incredible show of nature.
