An Optical Illusion the Size of a Village

An interesting public art installation in Vercorin, Switzerland by artist Felice Varini that turns the whole village into an optical illusion, by painting white sections on various houses along the hillside.

Guerilla Knitting, Cycle Style

Came across this on my last trip to Stockholm. There are several guerilla knitting groups in Sweden and in the US — it’s a popular form of eco-graffiti — and I always love finding their pieces hidden in the urban landscape.
IKEA Heights: Flatpack Melodrama
Everyone has a love hate relationship with IKEA. Sure, all your friends have the same inexpensive dinner table and chairs, but as much as you want to stray for the norm, you’re a sucker for simple Scandinavian design and are tempted by the same ones. But IKEA is more than just a store. It’s become a part of our cultural conscious, those big yellow letter legible from miles down the highway. Fortunately, the big Swedish giant provides for some good humor as well
Remember that guy who spent some time living in an IKEA? His venture pails in comparison to my new favorite find: IKEA Heights. It’s a mock melodrama, all taking place within the confines of IKEA. What makes this truly hilarious however is the fact that the IKEA staff had no idea the crew was filming.
And this is just the first episode… if you need some afternoon entertainment, you can catch episode 2, 3 and 4 as well.
Where Would You Want to Wake Up?
One question simple question was asked to 50 different people in Brooklyn. The result is this beautiful video.
Fifty People Once Question have a great website as well.

Soundtrack Not to Miss: Slumdog Millionaire

Bollywood pop mixed with traditional Indian beats and fused with an electronic sound (and even some M.I.A.!), the soundtrack to Slumdog Millionaire is a key component of a richly creative and inspirational movie. I’ve been playing it non-stop!
I’m particularly loving Jai Ho, Mausam & Escape and O Saya. I would put some videos up, but all that exists are boring photo montages. But if you do want to give these songs a listen, you can check out a whole YouTube channel devoted to the soundtrack.
And if you haven’t seen the film yet, you need to! It will inspire your wanderlust, make you think, and fuel your creative spirit!
Gingerbread Houses

I didn’t realize it until a few days ago, but green and sustainable gingerbread houses are definitely the “it” thing this season. Treehugger has written about them as have two other eco-concious sites Inhabitat and Grist, and even the New York Times got all excited about sustainable architecture represented in baked abodes.
Sadly, I didn’t have the time to put towards making my own version of a sustainable gingerbread house. But I’m still happy with the outcome. I guess I could lie and say that the candy canes are supposed to represent solar panels… but that wasn’t intentional.
What the evolution of technology really looks like
This video is pretty striking. Sort of scary and empowering all at the same time.
Pology Culturist blog
My first piece of writing ever published online was over at Pology. It’s a fantastic online culture journal with narratives and photography from around the globe. The journal was on hiatus for the better part of last year, but it has come back in full swing. I hadn’t visited the site in awhile and but when I checked it out today realized that I had been missing out on the Pology Culturist blog (actually the source of the video below). Be sure to give it a look.
